Scouting for 2013

February 21, 2013

With a short break from hunting over Christmas the scouting for the 2013 fallow and red season had  began.  Conditions have started off fairly dry with a relatively rain-less summer, the knee high feed  that was experienced in 2012 now resembles a cricket pitch. Luckily we have just received a bit of rain so that should see some growth before winter sets in

The short grass has made for good castie spotting and whilst scouting the ranges on one particular weekend we managed to pick up 28 cast fallow antlers. The scouting has been hit and miss with the reds this year but the fallow have certainly shown up in force with 300 animals spotted over  a weekend of 18 hours scouting.

This time of the year I make sure that I get to the back blocks also and do my part for the farmers and knock over as many pigs and goats that I can. These hunting opportunities make for some good field practice come the opening day of March 1 in NSW. MDGC0289-1500 Untitled-1500 Untitled-2500

The fallow have now all rubbed out and some promising bucks have shown up and are feeding up for the rut. We got some good film and stills of one bachelor mob of up and coming bucks but the footage was short lived due to torrential rain killing 2 of our cameras and an Iphone. Not a good day to forget your XTR jacket …. I learnt the hard way.

The prime summer layer has been perfect to get around in those hotter days and when the heavens opened the XTR was more than up to task.

March first cant come fast enough – there is truckloads of hunting ahead hopefully I will have something to share shortly.
